Samuel "Dooley" Dooligan is a shy, lonely teen who constantly tries to win his parents' approval, but never measures up to their expections. At school, he is the target of bullies unil befriended by his sixth grade teacher, Mr. Mackie, but Mr. Mackie's death leaves him again at their mercy. Becky, his neighbor and schoolmate, is his confident and only friend, yet it is Becky's well intended attempt at conjuring Mr. Mackie's spirit that leads to Sam's undoing.
When the school bullies destroy Sam's science project that he needs to earn a passing grade, Sam's desperate attempt to frighten them into leaving him alone results in a terrible accident.
